Vexed

If you live in this world you can see why Lot was vexed by his city that was destroyed. Lot’s not a popular character of the bible because he end’s on such a bad note. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, you can read about his appearances in Genesis 11-19, in the bible of course. He’s not in all the chapters, but he and his family were the only people saved when Sodom and Gomorra were destroyed.

After the destruction of those cities, Lot goes on to lose his wife, because she looked back toward that city she lived in for years. Yeah, it was bad, but it was her home. Looking back toward a city doesn’t sound so bad. Yet, not looking back was pressed upon her as a direct command from the Angel of the Lord. It was like Eve eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden; temptation overwhelmed and her; and Sodom became her destruction. Yep, she became that famous pillar of salt.

Now Lot’s just lost his home and wife in one day. He’s getting close to Job’s suffering, that’s another event for another time. Wow! I can understand why he got drunk; and I’m not a drinker. He lost so much so fast that few could understand his suffering. Now think back to his better times in Sodom. After he settled in the city he soon became a leader, we know that because we find him sitting at the gates of his city. That’s where the cities leaders gathered in those times. He seemed, fond of his city and he was prosperous. But he was vexed as it’s said in 2 Peter 2: 7-8, it meant he was annoyed, frustrated, and worried. He was worried because he knew God did not approve of the cities sodomy and other foul practices. He knew eventually the cities practices would catch up to them. I’m sure Lot knew of the flood in Noah’s time and what happened in the city that became Babylon (towel of Babel). God’s hand moved as now Sodom and Gomorra ignored history. Lot’s home and wife were gone! How do you think he felt? Do you think he felt the fool for moving there in the first place? You can look up his exit from the bible, but I’m not even going there!

Remember now my opening statement about Lot. Lot was vexed with his city because he knew what was going on in the city’s abode. We are vexed too. In our day and age it’s unique. Sodom and Gomorra’s practices have come into our own private homes even if we live away from those activities. Even our remote country homes are tainted by the News, entertainment, and yes of course this Internet. Never before in history has humanities corruption entered our haven, our homes. Red light districts can jump through your TV before you can even change a channel. Ad’s on seemingly good Internet sites turn foul in a moment. Even switching everything off, we’re hearing about it through our contacts through our work and church world. We know God won’t put up with it forever!

“ And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth? Luke 18: 7-8 NKJV

I hope He does find that faith! For now, mercy is on one side and judgment is on the other. Choose Christ’s mercy!
